Timothy Griffin: Looking Up

Cause and Effect

pants.jpgRecently, God brought some changes to my life. I have the same calling, but I'm in a different location.

In much of the last decade, parking and going into my office meant walking about 100 steps door-to-door. For the last two years, it has meant parking and walking about 20 steps, door-to-door.

Well in the past five weeks, it has meant parking and walking at least two city blocks to my office … and believe it or not, most of that is inside the building.

About a week and a half into my new location, as I got a pair of pants out the wash and started ironing them, I noticed a slightly bear spot on the seat of the pants. I made a mental note, but I didn’t think that much of it until the next day. That’s when I got another pair of pants out the wash that I had just bought the week before. I started ironing them and noticed a similar spot in the same place.

Well, I’ve seen the spot a few more times on other pants and needless to say, it has been somewhat of a mystery until this morning. This morning, as I was walking down the hallway toward my office, perhaps because I was carrying an extra box, or perhaps because of the way I rounded the corner, my ever present computer bag, came to my attention in the spot where it typically rests – on the seat of my pants. It was an “aha” moment. In essence, because of the added distance I have begun to walk and the way I carry my bag, the effect has been an increased wearing on my pants.

looking_up.jpgThroughout scripture, we see out-of-place causes that led to some undesired effects. Because Satan desired the power of God, he fell and took a third of the angels with him. Because Cain brought a sacrifice that was not accepted, in anger, he killed his brother.  Because David was not where he was supposed to be, he committed adultery and murder. Because Samson took a pagan wife, he was seduced and subdued … and the list goes on.

What about you? Is there something you’re doing in your life that’s going to cause an undesired effect? God will give us wisdom to do what we should do. Proverbs 1:20 tells us that “wisdom crieth in the streets,” but a few verses later we have the warning, “Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: I also will laugh at your calamity. I will mock when your fear cometh;"

I have been saying that I needed to get a rolling cart anyway and now, thanks to my “aha” moment, I will do that sooner than later or be faced with replacing several pairs of pants.  How much more do we need to take advantage of the grace of our “aha” moments from God?
